Uruguay vs Argentina world cup qualification
Uruguay vs Argentina 12th November 2021
Uruguay 0-1 Argentina
Argentina beat Uruguay by the slightest difference thanks to Ángel Di María's goal. The 'Albiceleste' added 28 points in the Qualifiers.
A goal after Uruguay lost possession in a dangerous area with Dybala winning the ball and setting up Ángel Di María to hit a beautiful strike curled into the top corner from just inside the penalty area in the 7th minute of the Río de la Plata classic gave Argentina a 0-1 victory in Montevideo on Friday that ratifies its great moment in the South American World Cup qualifiers and displaces Uruguay from the positions qualifying to Qatar. Di María wore the captain's armband today as Lionel Messi watched the game for 76 minutes from the bench.
The history of the match that closed the thirteenth day of the South American qualifiers could have been different if goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez did not prevent Nahitan Nández's shot from entering the net in the 5th minute. After the blow inflicted by Di María Uruguay responded well with some dangerous attacks with Luis Suárez hitting the post and hitting a good free kick just over the bar. Luis Suárez was again involved with a shot that was saved by Martínez's and Matías Vecino was frustrated by a timely intervention by the Aston Villa goalkeeper. Papu Gómez had a half chance in the second half but was hit wide and didn't trouble the Uruguay goalkeeper. In the end a very solid defensive performance with and got the victory without being brilliant.
La Albiceleste, second of the qualifiers, added 28 points in 12 games and Uruguay was parked at 16 after 13 starts and fell to sixth.
