Round 21
After seven years as River Plate coach, Marcelo Gallardo will have the opportunity to celebrate his first league title against Racing on Thursday, as part of the twenty-second day of the Professional Football League, which begins on Tuesday and ends on Thursday. El Millonario leads the league table with 49 points, followed by Talleres (40), Defensa y Justicia (37), Boca Juniors (36) and Vélez, Lanús and Colón (35).
River Plate comes to the match against Racing as the most inform team in the tournament: they have not lost 16 games and are the highest-scoring team (44 goals) and have the meanest defence (13) in the Argentine League. In their last match, the team led by Marcelo Gallardo won 0-1 against Platense, with a solitary goal from their young star, Julián Álvarez (21 years old). for the game next Thursday the veteran midfielder Enzo Pérez who is out injured and who will not play again this year due to a dislocation in his left elbow, neither will Milton Casco and midfielder Bruno Zuculini.
To celebrate the title in front of his fans at the Monumental, River will have to win against Racing (14th place with 26 points) and trust that Talleres does not add the three points on Tuesday against Gimnasia. If these results are confirmed, Marcelo Gallardo will lift his first league title with River Plate, crowning a period of success at the club (twelve titles in seven years).
Talleres will try to rush its last options to win against Gimnasia (10th place with 31 points), after drawing at home last Friday against Vélez Sarsfield. Vélez, who with that tie was left out of the title race, has an almost guaranteed place in the next Copa Libertadores for being the second best team in the annual ranking, only surpassed by River Plate.
The last access place to the Libertadores is occupied by Boca Juniors, which will seek to consolidate that position in this Wednesday's classic against Independiente (9th place with 31 points).
Xeneize coach Sebastián Battaglia could repeat the same eleven that won 2-0 against Sarmiento at the Bombonera last Saturday. Performance in the remaining four games will be key to determining whether or not Battaglia continues to lead Boca next year, since his contract expires in December.
